What’s happening?

In the Washwood Heath area of Birmingham, long term works to accommodate the arrival of HS2 are ongoing and include the demolition and reconstruction of both Aston Church Road and Saltley Viaduct.

The new Aston Church Road bridge is now completed and in use.

Works to replace Saltley Viaduct started on Sunday 10 May 2026 with the road now closed for 18 months.

Bus routes are on diversion and traffic is being advised to avoid the area and use A47 Heartlands Expressway and Aston Church Road as a diversion route

A new bridge will also be constructed to carry the high-speed train over the Lawley Middleway dual carriageway.

Aston Church Road

From Sunday 19 July 2026 at 02.00 until Monday 20 July at 02.00
Aston Church Road will be closed for 24 hour repair works.

Bus routes NX8A & 8C and NX94 & NX95 will be diverted via Duddeston Mill Road.
Some bus stops will be closed.

Please plan your bus journey if you are travelling by bus on Sunday 19 July 2026.
A local signed diversion will be in place for other traffic.

Travel tips

You will still be able to get to where you need to go, but consider the following:

Plan ahead and leave more time for your journey. If you travel, you’ll need more time for your journey to take account of changes and diversions.
Think about your options. If you are travelling locally for a short distance, consider walking or cycling to your destination. 
Public Transport. Bus routes will not be altered during this closure but journeys on 14, 94, 95 bus services may take longer so plan your bus journey and allow more time for travel.
Can you change the time you travel?. Avoid peak times where possible especially between 08:00-09:00 and 14:00-16:00 to avoid school hours.
