Willenhall area

A454 Corridor - Improved Cycle Lanes

Ends: Ongoing

Last updated: 11 November 2025

What’s happening?

We're building two new railway stations along the Walsall – Wolverhampton line at Darlaston and Willenhall.

Willenhall station will provide quicker and more reliable journeys to places like Birmingham, Wolverhampton and Walsall, reducing congestion and pollution.

The station will be equipped with two platforms, lifts, ticket machines, information screens and secure bike parking.

In addition, work is being carried out throughout 2025 to create a network of improved cycling routes in the Willenhall area and along the A454 corridor.

In order to build these segregated cycle paths, a series of highway works are taking place along A454 Willenhall Road, New Road and Somerford Place.

Please check back here regularly for updates on local road closures and bus diversions in this area.

A454 Corridor - Improved Cycle Lanes

From January 2025 through to Spring 2026, work is underway to create a network of segregated cycle routes in the Willenhall area.

The majority of the cycle routes will include a 3m wide cycleway providing two-way movement, separate from traffic and pedestrians with the aim of promoting a safe and sustainable mode of transport.

Latest works

Works on the highway to create a segregated cycle lane continue with a lane closure on parts of Willenhall Road from 9:30am to 3:30pm, Monday to Friday.

The one-way system on the approach to Portobello Island via B4464 Somerford Place will remain in place until the end of November 2025.

These works are part of the Noose Lane cycle improvements scheme being delivered by Walsall Council.

Local signed diversion routes are in place.

Bus users:

National Express service 25 towards Wolverhampton and Diamond service 57 towards Bilston will be diverted during the works.

A new bus stop is now available on New Road and further stops are available at Willenhall Market Place.
