Get cheaper travel to work

If you've just started a new job in the West Midlands, Workwise could get you free travel to work for two months, and a third at half price.

What is Workwise?

Workwise offers two 4-week travel passes free and a third pass at half price, to help new job starters get to their place of work.

You can benefit from Workwise if you’re:

  • starting, or have just started, a new job earning £30,000 a year or less
  • increasing your hours to 16 or more per week in a job you already have
  • not getting help with the cost of a travel pass

You can also apply for Workwise if you’ve been getting unemployment benefit. If you have, you can apply even if your salary now is more than £30,000 a year.

If you are 16 to 18 years old, and living in the West Midlands Combined Authority area, you can apply for a 16-18 photocard instead of Workwise and get half-price tickets until you’re 18.

With Workwise, you can get two 4-week tickets free, and a third pass at half price for:

  • bus travel
  • tram travel
  • combined bus, tram and train travel

You can also get free cycle hire and e-scooter for up to 30 days with Go Cycle Scoot.

You can get discounts on 4-week nBus tickets.

nBus allows you to use your tickets on any bus in the West Midlands nBus area.

Tram tickets can be used on the West Midlands Metro tram route.

Travel by bus, train and tram with an nNetwork ticket

You can apply for Workwise if:

  • you are about to start, or have just started, a job or apprenticeship earning £30,000 a year or less

Or:

  • you’re increasing your working hours to 16 hours or more per week (this can be in more than one job)

You can also apply if you’re working 16 hours or more per week and you’re:

  • self-employed
  • on a zero-hours contract

You also must:

  • live or work in Birmingham, Coventry, Dudley, Sandwell, Solihull, Walsall or Wolverhampton
  • currently pay full adult fares on public transport
  • work 16 hours or more per week or are increasing your hours to 16 or more per week
  • have been unemployed for at least one day, if you are starting a new job
  • apply within 10 days of starting your new job or within 10 days of increasing your hours to 16 a week or more

If you’re not eligible for Workwise, you may be able to save money through another discount or free travel scheme.

To apply for Workwise, you will need:

  • A passport-style photograph of yourself
  • Proof of your job offer or proof you are increasing your working hours to 16 hours or more a week
  • Proof of any unemployment benefit you've been receiving.

If you don’t have access to a computer, you can visit your local library to use one.

You can ask a friend or family member to help you apply.

If you’re registered with a Jobcentre, you can ask your work coach to help you.

You can also get application support online.

  • You can apply once per financial year. This is between 1 April and 31 March.
  • If you get a new job in a new financial year, you can apply again.

You cannot apply if you already get travel support through another scheme. For example, DWP travel support, 16-18 photocard scheme or another concessionary scheme.
