Sprint

Construction for Sprint Phase 2 in Birmingham started in September 2024. Work includes installing Sprint bus shelters, bus priority measures at traffic lights and highway improvements.  

Latest work 

The latest phase of Sprint works along the A45 Coventry Road have now been completed.  This work included the installation of new drainage systems, pedestrian crossings, carriageway widening, installation of new Sprint bus shelters, surfacing, junction improvements and landscaping. Some minor works still remain which will be completed at a later date.

New Sprint shelters have been installed at Broadyates Road, Keswick Road, Coalway Avenue and The Wheatsheaf which are now all operational.

Work for Sprint Phase 2 in Solihull started in September 2024 with the installation of a new bus lane being carried out along Lode Lane (next to the Jaguar Land Rover site). Further bus priority measures are also being introduced with Sprint bus shelters installed along Hobs Moat Road and in Solihull town centre. 

Latest work 

Hobs Moat Road

Works to install new drainage systems and widen the carriageway have been completed along Hobs Moat Road.

The existing bus stops for Old Lode Lane have been removed and new Sprint shelters have been installed which are now operational.

Works adjacent to Toby Carvery are now complete and a new controlled pedestrian crossing has also been installed which is now operational.

Resurfacing of the Service Roads on Hobs  Moat Road have also been completed and a cycle crossing at the Old Lode Lane junction has been installed.

Traffic signals have been upgraded and new kerbing has been installed at the Hobs Moat Road junction with A45 Coventry Road.

Works have been completed on Hobs Meadow which involved the removal of the existing shelter and resurfacing of the footpath. However, resurfacing of the carriageway will be completed at a later date.

Lode Lane

A new bus gate is now in operation at the junction of Lode Lane and Warwick Road.

Works at Jaguar Land Rover continue and involve resurfacing, the installation of new drainage systems, traffic light infrastructure, new kerblines, repositioning of central reservation, installation of lighting columns, signages and a pedestrian crossing.

The widening of the bus stop area has now been completed at Station Approach. Solihull Town Centre has seen the completion of highway resurfacing and installation of new bus shelters which are now operational.

The stop at Lode Heath/Lighthorne Road (into Solihull) has now been removed.  A new stop has been installed at Hermitage Road and is now operational.

Work on Phase 2 of the Sprint scheme are due to commence in Walsall. The project will deliver a range of improvements designed to support faster, more reliable bus journeys, improve accessibility for passengers, and enhance facilities along the route.

Latest works

The Phase 2 Sprint works are proposed along Darwall Street and Lichfield Street within Walsall Town Centre, with further improvements planned at the Skip Lane inbound and outbound bus stops. The works include:

• Installation of new, enhanced Sprint bus shelters with real-time passenger information and improved accessibility features.
• Highway improvements designed to improve bus journey reliability and traffic flow.
• Resurfacing and footway improvements at selected locations.
• Installation and upgrade of street lighting, traffic signal equipment and associated infrastructure.

Our region is growing. By 2035, the population of the West Midlands is set to increase by up to 444,000 (100 people per day) and we expect 215,000 new homes to be built across the region by 2030. 

In the same period, we anticipate that business investment will generate an additional 50,000 jobs, while the introduction of HS2 will open our connections to a wider area. 

We also want growth to be inclusive and sustainable so that everyone can benefit from the opportunities it will bring. 

Investment in our passenger transport network will help provide the capacity and quality of service we need, while helping to keep our region moving. 

Dedicated bus lanes, priority signalling at junctions and swifter movement of passengers on and off buses, means that journey times will be quicker and more predictable without buses going any faster. 

We are committed to providing ongoing communications and engagement with communities along the corridor, particularly during construction. Notifications are sent out to residents and businesses two weeks in advance of work taking place in a particular area.
